Austin Fence Permits — What You Need to Know

Most residential fences under 6 feet in rear and side yards don’t require a city permit in Austin. However, front yard fences, corner lots, fences over 6 feet, and properties in floodplains have additional requirements. Austin’s Safe Fencing ordinance (updated July 2023) applies to picket spacing and pool barrier designs for all new and significantly replaced fences.
